Gamecube's 480-pixel Progressive Scan Mode Tested

    IGNcube recently had its first chance to see GameCube running on progressive scan, Panasonic HDTVs. We are happy to report that the results of a 480p display are quite impressive. It's really refreshing to see a consistent, clean picture without the loss in visual quality caused by the black, horizontal scan lines seen with interlaced TV sets.
    Running GameCube in a 480p progressive scan mode requires a compatible TV, of course. With the purchase of a relatively cheap set of cables, high-definition fanatics can plug into their component inputs on their HDTVs (or HDTV-ready) sets. The major benefits of a 480p display are being able to see one contiguous picture, which gives you a better sense of framerates and texture quality. The overall feel is very close to that of a computer monitor. You can see all the detailed polygon models, crisp textures, and get an improved sense of color themes.
    Nintendo is said to be making 480p a standard display mode for all GameCube software, which means anyone with the right HDTV set can benefit from it. As HDTV sets come down in price, this feature will be more appreciated by videogame consumers.
