"A Conversation Between Friends"
A Conversation Between Friends
Link was sitting outside one autumn day, just bored. Ganon hadn't attacked in a while and Link had done his chores around the castle. About fifty yards away Princess Zelda was picking flowers, something she loved to do. She didn't have that much time to do it right now, though, not with cold weather on the way. Link sighed as he watched the girl he loved. They were about the same age. He loved Zelda's golden blonde hair and big green eyes. She'd probably slap him if he told her how he dreamed about her at night, he mused. But he couldn't help it. She didn't seem to understand that it was normal for guys.
Zelda stood up, walked over, and sat next to him. Link was the only person her age she could really talk to. "Nothing to do, Link?" she asked.
"Is that a trick
question? I say no and you find some task for me to do?" he asked.
He took a flower from her bunch and gently placed it in her hair, near
"Making sure you're not sick," she smirked.
"Zelda, if I was sick I sure wouldn't get anything done," said Link. "Okay, maybe I am." He paused. "Lovesick. There, I said it. Can you blame me?"
Zelda smiled at that. "I'm sure you've said that to all the girls."
"Only to the one
I love-and that's you," said Link. He took her hand and gently kissed the
back of it. "Zelda, be honest. What do you really think of
Zelda drew her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. She studied the dark-haired, brown-eyed young man next to her. "Because sometimes you act like a jerk," she said bluntly. "You make these remarks that tell me that you're just after a good time with a girl. For you, I think, falling in love with a girl means lusting after her."
Link looked at
her. "You really think that?" he said. He scratched his head. "Boy, did
I send off the wrong message! Yeah, I look at girls, but that's
She looked into his eyes. "Link...you really love me, don't you?" she asked softly. "Even after all the things I've said and done...."
"I just pass it off as being a snooty princess," said Link. "I figure, maybe you'll come around."
"But why do you act like that?"
Link thought about
that. "Zelda, put yourself in my place. It's not cool for guys to get into
that mushy stuff. So naturally we joke around about it. So,
"Well...as a princess,
I'm used to thinking that I'll one day marry a prince," said Zelda.
"But after dealing with snobby princes, like that Facade among
"Maybe it went to your head," said Link.
It was Zelda's turn to look pensive. She sighed. "Yes, maybe you're right, Link," she said.
"Do you like me even a little?" asked Link.
Zelda smiled at
him. "Of course I like you. You're my friend," said Zelda. "Not to mention
you're the only person my age I can really talk to. Anyone
Link took a breath. "Zelda...remember that time I was separated from my body and you could see me because you're in love with me? I'm just wondering-why are you trying to deny it? It does hurt."
She just looked at him, wondering what to say. Finally she spoke. "I think it goes back to you trying to come off as a ladies' man."
"Well, I'm really
not, I just told you," said Link. "I think we can have more than just a
friendship, Zelda. I'd like to be able to say that you're my
"I hurt you?" Zelda asked. Link nodded. "I-I didn't know...you never said anything about that," said Zelda.
"Well, that goes back to trying to act macho," said Link.
"Well, I'll tell
you, Link, if you want a more serious relationship we're going to have
to work on our communication," Zelda told him. "All this time we've
"And I guess you're not such a snooty princess after all, Zelda," Link smirked.
Link put his arm around her shoulders, and she let him. "Kiss?" he asked.
"Sure," said Zelda.
Link gently tilted her face upward and touched his lips to hers. They closed their eyes as they kissed for several moments. "Oh, Link, that was wonderful...my first kiss," she sighed.
"Mine too. My first real kiss," he added. "I am not counting your evil double and that Gibdo that turned me into a frog." He smiled at her. "Want another one?"
They kissed again and suddenly they heard a shrill "Hey! Knock it off!"
Link and Zelda parted and looked up at Spryte, the fairy princess who lived in the castle. "Zelda, you wouldn't happen to have a flyswatter, would you?" Link asked. "Go away, Spryte, we're busy! And you're too late!"
Zelda laughed and kissed Link again. Spryte giggled and flew off. "Just invite me to the wedding!" she called.
"Not a bad idea," Link said.
"We'll see," said Zelda.
